Week 1, 2021 (1/15-25/21)

Savannah to Florida (Jan. 15, 2021)

After a nice Holiday in Georgia, we are starting our next adventure to Florida. We’ll be heading south through Georgia with about 7 ports of call. Then cruise into Florida with a stop in Jacksonville and a detour through the St. Johns River. We’ll continue south on the east coast to Stuart (lived there for about 5 years) then cut through Lake Okeechobee to the west side of Florida. We’ll then move north to Bradenton to be with Arya and Molly for the birth of our first grandbaby!

Sunbury Marina (1/17/21)

Crescent River Anchorage/Sapelo Island (1/18/21)  Beautiful, quiet anchorage!

Just us, the birds and the stars!

              Brunswick Landing Marina (1/19/21)

Nice town with a beautiful sunset and a fun restaurant.

Cumberland Island/Brickhill River Anchorage (1/21-22/21)

Cumberland Island has too much history to even begin to relate it here, but history buffs should definitely read up on its past. In 1972 the Carnegie family sold the island to the federal government and it became a unit of the National Park Service, designated as a National Seashore. There are still a few structures on the island. The First African Baptist Church was rebuilt in 1930, Greyfield Inn owned by the Carnegie Family built in 1900, Plum Orchard Mansion owned by the National Park Service, and Stafford Plantation also owned by the Carnegie Family. Only ruins of the Dungeness mansion, built on Native American Shell Mound, still exists. It burnt down once in 1866, rebuilt 1884, to burn down again in 1959. Crops grown on the island include cotton, indigo, rice and live oak.

We were fortunate to see 2 of the famous wild horses on our walk around the island. We also saw the Plum Orchard Mansion but it is currently closed.

Fernandina Harbor Marina (1/21/21)

Jacksonville (1/23-25/21) We stayed at a free city dock across from the Jaguars Stadium! They are revitalizing that area to include shops, restaurants, event center, parks, and living space. Had lunch with my high school swim coach, Lynda Quillen! Amazing pizza at Catullo’s and delicious beer at Intuition Ale! Great seeing her and catching up!
